Sewer Jetting and Drain Cleaning
Sewer lines carry everything that leaves a home’s plumbing system, which means they naturally collect buildup over time. Grease, soap residue, mineral deposits, paper products, and debris can slowly narrow the inside of the pipe. As that buildup increases, water flow becomes restricted and drains may begin to slow down.
Sewer jetting is a method used to clear these types of blockages and restore normal flow. Instead of using mechanical tools that punch a small hole through a clog, jetting uses high-pressure water to clean the entire inside surface of the pipe. The process helps remove grease, sludge, scale, and other materials that can accumulate in sewer lines.
Jetting is commonly used in both residential and commercial sewer systems, especially in areas where grease buildup or heavy usage causes recurring drain problems.
How Sewer Jetting Works
Sewer jetting equipment sends pressurized water through a specialized hose and nozzle that is inserted into the sewer line. The nozzle directs water both forward and backward, allowing it to break up blockages while also flushing debris out of the pipe.
As the hose moves through the line, the pressurized water scrubs the interior walls of the pipe. This helps remove layers of buildup that may not be reached with traditional drain cleaning methods. The debris is then washed downstream through the sewer system.
Because the process uses water rather than chemicals, jetting is often used as a cleaning method for pipes that need a more thorough clearing than basic snaking.
When Sewer Jetting May Be Recommended
Sewer jetting is often used when drains repeatedly slow down or clog due to buildup in the line. It is also commonly recommended when grease, sludge, or scale has accumulated along the walls of the pipe.
Properties with long sewer lines, older plumbing systems, or heavy usage may benefit from periodic cleaning to keep wastewater flowing properly. Restaurants and commercial kitchens often rely on jetting because grease buildup can develop more quickly in those systems.
Jetting can also be used as part of a larger diagnostic process, where cleaning the line makes it easier to inspect the pipe with a sewer camera.
Sewer Jetting vs. Traditional Drain Cleaning
Traditional drain cleaning tools, such as augers or mechanical snakes, are designed to break through clogs so water can pass through. While this approach can restore flow temporarily, it often leaves residue and buildup behind on the pipe walls.
Sewer jetting takes a different approach by washing the entire pipe interior. Instead of simply creating an opening through a clog, the water pressure helps remove layers of material that have built up over time. This can help restore the pipe closer to its original diameter.
For this reason, jetting is sometimes used when repeated clogs occur in the same section of pipe.
Maintaining Sewer Lines Over Time
Like any part of a plumbing system, sewer lines benefit from occasional inspection and maintenance. Avoiding grease disposal in drains, limiting debris entering the system, and addressing slow drains early can help reduce buildup.
When recurring issues occur, cleaning methods such as jetting can help remove accumulated material and allow the system to function more efficiently.
Understanding how sewer lines work and how buildup develops can help property owners make informed decisions about maintenance and long-term system care.
